The range and the scope of our Rio 2012 congress, and its theme of knowledge-policy-action, is shown by our confirmed speakers, six more of whom are featured here. From left to right they are as follows. Carlos Monteiro of the University of São Paulo, and of our WN series of commentaries on ultra-processing. Harriet Kuhnlein of McGill University, co-convenor of the Rio2012 programme committee. Fabio Gomes of the Brazilian national cancer institute (INCA), currently taking a break from his column for this website. Ibrahim Elmadfa of the University of Vienna, president of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences. Shiriki Kumanyika of Penn State University, co-chair of the International Obesity Task Force. Juan Rivera of the National Institute of Public Health, Mexico, and like Harriet a champion of indigenous and traditional food systems.

One of the many special features of Rio2012 is that all speakers are participants in the whole congress, and also that everybody who attends the congress will have every opportunity to participate. The congress is interactive. As part of this democratic approach, speakers are being invited to join in the whole congress. This includes the working groups each of which will progress its business over all three days of the congress.

The speakers we feature this month are all Association members, whose profiles are posted here on our website. From left to right they are as follows. Carlos Monteiro of the School of Public Health at the University of São Paulo, a world authority on obesity, advisor to the Brazilian government and also to the World Health Organization. His series of commentaries on ultra-processing, which continue this month, have now overall been accessed by around 75,000 readers.

Next is Harriet Kuhnlein of McGill University,founding Director of the Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE). She is Emerita Professor of Human Nutrition at McGill, and co-convenor of the Rio2012 programme committee. Next is Fabio Gomes of the Brazilian national cancer institute (INCA), currently taking a break from his column for this website, who is a member of the Rio2012 programme committee as an Abrasco representative.

Next is Ibrahim Elmadfa of the University of Vienna, current president of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, president of the 2001 International Congress on Nutrition held in Vienna, and editor-in-chief of the journal Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism. Then is Shiriki Kumanyika of Penn State University, co-chair of the International Obesity Task Force. She was lead editor of a 2010 US Institute of Medicine report, Bridging the Evidence Gap in Obesity Prevention: A Framework to Inform Decision Making. This, as she says, 'urges policy makers and researchers to consider obesity from a systems perspective and take a broad and transdisciplinary view of what constitutes evidence and how to generate it'.

Finally on the right is Juan Rivera of the National Institute of Public Health, Mexico. 'Nutrition has been my passion for over thirty years' he says. 'It all started at the end of high school, back in 1973, when it became clear that I wanted to devote my career to contribute to social equity, in a country characterised by deep social disparities'. He shares this commitment with many others of our speaker-participants.

Last month we featured another six from the list below of confirmed speakers. These were as follows. César Victora of the University of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, current president of the International Epidemiology Association. Marion Nestle from New York University, US, famous for her books Food Politics and What To Eat. The French sociologist of cuisine, food and gastronomy, Claude Fischler. Tim Lang, co-author of Food Wars and professor of food policy at City University, London, UK. Renato Maluf, president of CONSEA, the Brazilian institute for food security. And secretary-general of the 2009 ICN in Bangkok, Thailand, Emorn Wasantwasut We will be featuring many more speaker-participants in the coming months.
