Three postdoctoral fellowships in Nutritional Epidemiology at USP, Brazil

The Center for Epidemiological Studies in Health and Nutrition at the University of Sao Paulo invites applications for three postdoctoral positions. Applicants of any nationality must have a PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology or related areas obtained in the last seven years and strong scientific interest in nutritional epidemiology. The three fellowships are awarded for undertaking research activities as part of the project “Consumption of ultra-processed foods, dietary nutrient profile and obesity in seven countries”. This project, funded by São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and executed by Professor Carlos Monteiro. Deadline for application is June 15, 2016. Read More

PAHO Nutrient Profile Model is now out

The PAHO Nutrient Profile Model is now available online. It provides detailed criteria of critical nutrients (free sugars, sodium, saturated fat, total fat and trans-fatty acids), as well as caloric and non-caloric sweeteners are defined for PAHO Members States to develop policies and regulations to curb the consumption of energy-dense/nutrient-poor foods and non-alcoholic beverages.Read More

New report: “Carbonating the World”

The WPHNA salutes the new report “Carbonating the World. The marketing and Health Impact of Sugar Drinks in Low- and Middle- income Countries”, published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The report explains how the two major global soft-drink producers have shifted to invest and to grow their market among low- and middle-income countries to overcome the declining sales in high-income countries. The report mentions the main strategies used by these corporations and also provides some recommendations to governments, civil society and the catering industry to overcome the massive growth of sugar-sweetened beverages market on emerging countries.Read More

PRESS RELEASE: Panamanian Association of Dieticians/ Nutritionists calls for nutrition labelling in Panama

The XVII Congress of the Latin American Society of Nutrition (SLAN 2015) is being held in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from 8 to 12 November 2015. The Panamanian Association of Dietitians/Nutritionists (APND) is taking this opportunity to raise awareness for the need of regulation on nutrition labelling in Panama. The country still faces challenges due to the lack of norms and standards on nutrition labelling in the back of packages. Labelling is not standardised in format, content, nor even in language (many different languages can be found, from English, to Arab and Mandarin). APND is taking this message to SLAN 2015, and calls for support from international organizations to ensure that the country adopts standards for nutrition labelling in accordance with Codex Alimentarius guidelines. Crowdfunding campaign to support research on “How to sit less at work”

Evidence-based interventions and procedures are central to public health and nutrition practice. One of the topics that has been hitting the headlines lately is sitting at work. Research found that lack of movement, including sitting for too long, has a negative impact on health. At the same time, many devices have appeared on the market, using health claims (i.e. improve health or even weight loss) with little scientific support. The Cochrane Work Group at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Kuopio, Finland, are trying to find out which of the gadgets actually work and which ones do not raise to the promise. The group initiated a crowdfunding campaign in order to support the updating of a systematic review regarding this issue. People who want to get involved can support the initiative by participating in the campaign. After the campaign is closed, there will be a webinar, which will present the results and findings of the systematic review.Read More

Master course on Nutrition and Human Rights – Oslo

This 10-ECTS elective master level course will take place in Oslo, Norway, from 6 January to 12 February 2015 (6 weeks). The course is run by the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA), in collaboration with the Department of Nutrition and the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, both at the University of Oslo (UiO). The course is open to students from different backgrounds, including nutrition, health sciences, environmental studies, development studies, agriculture/food production, law, political science, anthropology, sociology and interdisciplinary master programmes involving any of these subject areas. Petition for a simple nutrition labeling in France

A petition for a simple nutrition labeling, intuitive and understandable by all on the front face of the food packaging has been launched by a wide coalition of civil society (i.e. health care professionals , consumers and patients’ associations, public health experts). The petition asks the French government to implement a scale for nutritional quality on the front of food packages which is simple, intuitive, standardised and understandable (referring to 5 color model by Professor Serge Hercberg in his report to the Ministry of Health “Proposals to boost the French nutritional policy in the field of chronic disease prevention via nutrition.”, January 28th, 2014). This scale is based on a score calculated of nutritional quality content from a public health point of view (calories, simple sugars, saturated fats, salt, fiber, fruits and vegetables, proteins). This score will easily classify foods into 5 classes on the color scale (Green – Yellow – Orange – Pink Fuschia – Red), coupled with letters (A / B / C / D / E) to ensure greater readability.Read More

Consultation on the revised draft of the political outcome document of the ICN2

As previously announced, two documents are expected to come out of the ICN2 — a political outcome document and a framework of action for its implementation. A first draft of the political outcome document was released in March 2014 and received comments from various individuals and organizations through an online consultative process organized via the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum). A revised draft based on the first consultation has just been released and is also open for comments through the FSN Forum. Brazil fights against marketing to children

On April 4, 2014, Brazil published a new resolution by the National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (CONANDA), in which all types of publicity directed towards children are considered abusive. The resolution mentions that directing publicity and any type of market communication to children with the intention of persuading them to the consumption of any product or service is abusive, therefore illegal according to the National Code for Consumer Protection. The resolution entered into force on the date of its publication, and covers all types of media, such as printed materials, television and radio commercials, banners and websites, labels, merchandising, promotions of any kind and activities in sale points and events. WHO/FAO public consultation on ICN2 draft political outcome document

Two documents are expected to come out of the ICN2 — a political outcome document and a framework of action for its implementation. A zero draft of the political outcome document, prepared by the FAO and WHO Secretariats, has now been released for public consultation. The draft political outcome document focuses on multiple threats of malnutrition are a major challenge to global development; a vision for global action to end all forms of malnutrition; committing to action. Comments will be consolidated by the joint conference secretariat of FAO/WHO and be presented to the Member States Joint Working Group in March 2014. IASO urges government action on obesity and NCDs

The International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) has today published a 10-point action plan for governments to tackle obesity. The Policy Briefing calls on governments to take a systems wide approach to tackling obesity and to work with civil society, especially to monitor the drivers of disease and to hold all stakeholders accountable for progress. It also calls for further steps to be taken to strengthen nutrition security by protecting consumers, primarily children, from inducements to consume unhealthy products. Read More

Public Health Nutrition (PHN) is looking for contributions for a Special Issue on “Sustainability and Public Health Nutrition”, which will be published in 2015. The deadline for submissions is 15 March 2014. Submitted manuscripts must be original and may not be under review by another publication. Joint response: WHO Consultation on indicators for the Global NCD Action Plan 2013-2020

In August 2013, WHO opened a web-based consultation on the zero draft of a set of indicators to monitor the progress with the implementation of the WHO Global NCD Action Plan 2013-2020. The deadline for submission of contributions was today, November 8. A joint response was prepared and submitted on behalf of 12 international organisations concerned with noncommunicable diseases, who are members of the UK NCDs and Development Task Force. Read More

A second online discussion feeding into the preparations of the International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) has been launched by the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition. Launch of the 2013 Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Nutrition

On June 6th, The Lancet will publish a series of five papers featuring new data and policy recommendations on global nutrition.
